With the return of market economy after 1989, there was suddenly a lot of room for the entrepreneurial spirit and technical skill of Czech engineers. Along with that, a fundamental transformation of economic thinking was taking place, with customers now being an important factor in companies’ decisions on their product range. Family businesses were mushrooming, but only those with a clear vision and their own final products and development base were competing successfully with foreign companies newly entering the Czech market.

The room on the upper floors of the European Parliament building in Brussels is getting filled up and the atmosphere is growing tense. It's about to start. I enter the hall and shake hands with those present. We all know it's not going to be easy, and we make jokes that we should have also brought sleeping bags with. At least we have supplies of chocolate and energy drinks.

"As Canada's ambassador, I benefit every day from the warm and friendly relations between our countries, and I see the Czech Republic as one of our closest partners and allies," says Ayesha Rekhi. "Our two countries have strong historical ties, such as the multiple waves of Czechoslovak immigration in the 20th century, but also shared values in various areas such as international trade, human rights and security. This foundation gives us a head start in the relations between our governments, companies and institutions. From my position, I’m doing my best to keep building and further strengthening these relations," Ms. Rekhi adds at the beginning of our talk at the Canadian Embassy in Prague.

If someone asked you which planet besides Earth you consider to be the most beautiful in the solar system, what would you answer? The first planet that came to our mind was Saturn, for its exquisite rings and beautiful moons. Enceladus in particular may have more in common with Earth than we can imagine. Scientific observations have shown that it has the most favourable living conditions from all space objects known so far – it has water. It is mostly covered with pure ice, and scientists believe there is something like a hidden ocean under its surface.

Pletiva Dobrý a Urbánek was founded in 2013 based on an equal share of both company co-owners. Thanks to clearly defined roles in the company, a stable team of experienced employees, and cooperation with the National Development Bank it has expanded every year ever since. “We own two locations with large stock. To buy these premises we used the NDB’s product. I dare say that it was one of the key moments in the company history,” Tomáš Urbánek describes. Gradually, their original company was joined by other projects, and this year everything culminates in the transformation of their business into a holding company.

"Besides Europe, which is our main export territory, we have several Latin American countries in our export portfolio, Mexico and Brazil in particular. As industrial production moves around the world in the global economy, we follow it with our products and services," Igor Láník Jr. and his brother Boris explain, adding that the relocation trend in world markets has not surprised them. Their family company LANIK manufactures and sells technical ceramics for foundries, mainly ceramic foam filters, ceramic cups and ceramic cores for precision casting.
